GETTING TO KNOW OUR STUDIOS: EP4 - MICHAEL DOYLE STUDIO

STUDIO NAME
Michael Doyle Studio
Your Name
Michael Doyle
When/how/why was your studio founded?
Michael Doyle Studio was founded a year ago, but I’ve been doing versions of it for years. Most recently I had co-found a studio with a business partner, grew for three years, and become an established design and illustration studio. But I always struggled with separating my art practice with design and business. Now everything I do is under one umbrella, no line in the sand, it sorta feels like where I started about 18 years ago. Sometimes moving forward means moving backwards at the same time, which maybe thats my new studio motto.
Who or what inspires your process?
Being inspired is like 90% of the job. It is always a rotating mix of nostalgia, culty intrigue and the love of nature. And right now specifically it’s Helen Frankenthaler, Ramona Quimby, Martha Graham and walking-stick bugs (they’re amazing!)
Daily ritual?
Every moring I light a candle. I wish I did more and sometimes I do but without fail I make this small gesture.
Favorite item in your studio?
Just each and everyone of my books!
Favorite nerd hobby or interest?
The Prydain Chronicles By Lloyd Alexander, a 5 book fantasy series from my childhood that i reread about once a year. I'm a total nerd.
