Design Lecture Series by Civilization

Civilization presents their highly anticipated 2018/2019 Design Lecture Series. All lectures are free (though tickets go quickly!) at the Seattle Public Library, Central Branch in downtown Seattle.

The first lecture will be presented by Bonnie Siegler on September 21, 2018, with doors opening at 6:30 pm.

This year Join Shop will also be partnering with the series to bring design goods at the lectures!

Immerse yourself in a grand display of art shown in a spectacular place at the foot of the newly constructed Avalara Hawk Tower in Pioneer Square. The artwork of over forty established and emerging Pacific Northwest artists showcases an impressive variety of styles and mediums, offering a uniquely inclusive snapshot of the Seattle art scene. 

Situated adjacent to the Seattle Art Fair site, this location—on the north side of CenturyLink Field—is a short walk away from the Art Fair. 

1 ROOM is showcasing over 40 different PNW artists, including JOIN members, Brian Beck, Michael Doyle of Apartment on Belmont, and Gabriel Stromberg.

Fresh Start Plant Swap and Fundraiser

Fresh Start is, first and foremost, a plant swap. Bring your plant cuttings, starts, pots, gardening tools, etc to trade and give away to others. This is a free event at Bar Ciudad in Georgetown in Seattle. 

Fresh Start is also a fundraiser event for local nonprofits. In each city that a swap is hosted, a local organization is selected to raise money for through a fundraiser raffle, with local artists and makers donating prizes.

Fresh Start Seattle 2018 will be supporting Urban Artworks - a nonprofit providing opportunities for youth and contemporary artists to create public works of art.

There will be raffle drawings with prize donations from any local artists and makers including JOIN members Rachel Ravitch and fruitsuper.

Woven Necklace Workshop with Zelma Rose

Fiber artist Lisa Anderson Shaffer of Zelma Rose is teaching a class on how to make one of her best selling designs, the Joshua Necklace/Belt. In this class you will learn Lisa's own methods for hand weaving and cord wrapping this versatile fiber design that can be worn a multitude of ways as a necklace and a belt. The workshop will start with instruction on weaving and cord wrapping, and end with knotting techniques to style the Joshua necklace. 

Each student will be given cotton & hemp cord (enough to make a Joshua Necklace/Belt and to play and create their own design), cotton storing bag, needle and needle book, and printed knot and styling technique info sheet/book. 

When: Saturday, July 21st 1-4pm

Patterned Tote Bag Workshop: San Diego

Erin Dollar, founder of Cotton & Flax, is teaching a workshop on block printing on fabric at their studio in San Diego. Students will learn how to design and print their own designs to create a custom tote bag!

All materials will be provided: linoleum blocks, carving tools and xacto knives, non-toxic printing ink, and a sturdy cotton tote bag. At the end of the workshop, you’ll go home with your own custom-printed tote bag to use for groceries, trips to the library, or a day at the beach.

Spoon Carving Workshop with Melanie Abrantes

Melanie Abrantes is hosting another Spoon Carving Workshop at her Oakland Studio this June 30. Melanie will guide her students with instruction on spoon carving, as well as different wood types and tools. After carving their spoon, students will sand and apply a finish to their creations to bring home and use. All tools will be provided to use during the workshop, with the option of purchasing the tools at a discounted rate to continue the craft at home.

Hand Broom Workshop with Hannah B Quinn

Join designer Hannah Quinn and learn cord lashing techniques for making up to three hand brooms using black-dyed and natural broom corn. Take a handful of broom corn home and continue making unique cleaning tools on your own.

There are two different workshop sessions available currently.

When: Sunday, 6/17. 11 am - 1:30 pm OR Wednesday, 6/20, 6 p  8:30 pm

A $125 non-refundable workshop fee covers all supplies and materials.

Furnishing Utopia 3.0: Hands to Work at NY Design Week

Design Within Reach presents a special exhibit, Furnishing Utopia to be presented at NY Design Week. Designers were asked to explore the virtues of focused work and cleanliness of the Shakers. This theme of chores reexamines our concepts of these activities and the tools related to them.

With 50+ new objects from 26 international designers, the exhibit also includes interactive visual and sound installations to challenge visitors to consider again common tools. 

Hands to Work is curated by Studio Gorm, Christopher Specce and Ladies & Gentlemen Studio, with overall creative direction by Ladies & Gentlemen Studio. 

This year's exhibit includes 26 international designers, including a few of JOIN Collective's studios, like Fin, Ladies & Gentlemen Studio, Pat Kim, and Studio Gorm!

The exhibit is open 10 am - 6 pm Saturday and Sunday, and 9 am- 5 pm Monday and Tuesday.

American Design Club presents BUILT, at NYCxDesign 2018, one of the biggest design showcases in the world. The reception party of American Design Club's 14th design show will be held at Canal Street Market on May 17th 6 - 8pm.

Watercolor Botanicals Class

A super special workshop event! Sarah Simon of TheMintGardener will be teaching a Botanical Watercolor class at JOIN Shop. 

Watercolor Instructor Sarah will provide the knowledge, tips and tricks to create a beautiful watercolor piece of Potted House Plants & Herbs. You will spend the first hour learning five different watercolor painting techniques, so you can incorporate these new painting skills into your collection of talents. The second hour will be spent learning to shape, paint, mix and blend your own leafy botanicals, with all the materials that you need provided. This class is for beginners or experienced artists – anyone who is interested in learning the techniques and style of the Watercolor Art!

Ticket price includes instruction, completed watercolor technique sheet, materials to take home to continue practicing your new skills! Join us for a wonderful afternoon of painting and learning; beverages and light appetizers will be included. Buy a ticket for you...and a couple of friends!
